On Sunday April 29th the University of New Hampshire Cycling Team will be hosting the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference Championships in Durham, NH. The racecourse will be on a 1 km course on Academic Way, Arts Way, McDaniel Drive, and Mill Road, right in the heart of campus. This event will draw upwards of 500 individual collegiate riders, as well as offer the opportunity for community members to participate in the Pro-1-2-3, Women’s 4, and Master’s 35+ with cash purses of up to 500 dollars. Additionally, the team will be carrying out children’s races at midday preceded by a safety and skills clinic.

Throughout the day on Sunday, there will be 9 different collegiate races split up by ability level and gender, with racers traveling from as far as western Pennsylvania, Delaware, and even Canada. In addition to Sunday’s races that involve the whole community, the collegiate racers will also participate in a Team Time Trial event and Road Race in Strafford, NH circumnavigating Bow Lake on Saturday April 28th.

A number of businesses have already signed up to support the first year event including Mariner Realty, Gus’ Bike Shop, Exeter Cycles, La Festa Pizzeria, and NH Orthopaedic Center, who will be the title sponsor for the event. With only a short month until race day, the event still needs additional sponsorship to cover operating expenses and volunteers including course marshals and drivers for support vehicles. All proceeds from the race go towards the 2013 event and the UNH Cycling Team.

UNH Cycling Starts Strong in 2012 Road Season

The University of New Hampshire Cycling team has started out the 2012 spring road racing season with a bang, with the strongest start since the team won Easterns in 2007. At the end of the first weekend at Rutgers, NJ, the team finished 4th overall and 2nd in division 1. Last weekend at Grant’s Tomb Criterium and Steven’s Duck Circuit Race the team brought along 28 racers spread across every racing category, for a victorious 1st place finish for the weekend omnium.

Notable finishes at Grant’s Tomb include wins in the Women’s C category (new freshman Betsey Pettitt), Men’s C category (James Kennedy, UNH Cycling vice president), and Men’s B category (Greg DiSanto, with Taylor Smith snatching the 2nd place spot), among many other strong finishes across all categories.

Now the team is in sunny Clermont, Florida enduring and thoroughly enjoying riding 300+ miles over the course of 5 days. On Sunday March 18, UNH will return north stronger than ever to race the Philly Phyler and Philadelphia, PA.

Provincetown Training Camp

On Friday January 13th members of the UNH cycling team arrived on the cape of Massachusetts hoping the weekend would bring them good fortune and good weather.

The first day dawned sunny, with a high of 36 degrees and some fierce winds reaching 20-30 mph. The UNH'ers headed out to explore the cape and didn't finish until they covered 72 miles.

The next day brought snow and colder temperatures. Again, the UNH riders rolled out from Provincetown and managed to cover some serious distance. Despite some cold extremities the team enjoyed the snow day ride. Pat Galvin even went as far as to say "I don't really mind the cold, it gives me an excuse to wear my onesie!"

Our third day at camp was another sunny but cold day. We set out on the longest ride of the weekend. The destination was Chatham and we rode there and back with an almost perfect combination of rail trail and roads. In honor of MLK the team rode 88 miles together. The combined mileage for the weekend is a bit different from rider to rider but a solid base was built for everyone.

A few shout outs are in order: Greg had it on lockdown with the navigation. Our coach Tony Eberhardt came up with the idea, kept us fed and kept us all out there riding. Our freshman team mates pushed themselves long miles through cold weather and I'm proud to say they killed it. Our alumni friend only known as "the wizard" also made the trip and we were glad he was there.

Winter Update

Here are a couple of things you have to know for the golf competition

Greetings Friends of UNH Cycling!

Friday January 13th marks Day 1 of the first annual UNH Winter training Camp in Cape Cod, MA. Ten male riders of the UNH Cycling team accompanied by Coach Tony Eberhardt will rack up the base miles along the quiet bike routes of Cape Cod. The Men of UNH Cycling are gearing up in anticipation of the Collegiate season which kicks off at Rutgers University 7 weeks from camp. With bitterly cold temperatures in the forecast, riders will be sure to bundle up with numerous layers, booties, gloves and winter caps!

On Monday January 9th, Richard Whitney(www.marinerrealty.com), Bella Olesky, and Patrick Galvin presented at the Durham, NH Town Council Meeting. The Council approved the original proposed criterium course around B lot and Parsons Hall for the ECCC Championships on April 29th, 2012! Great news!
